In Singapore, they are an accepted pre-requisite for direct admission to junior colleges and polytechnics. In addition, students who have successfully completed 'O' level can enroll in AAC's Diploma courses leading to Bachelor degrees.

Local students spend 4 years preparing for 'O' level and the standard is high so it is essential that foreign students attend a preparation program because the examination is conducted in English (with the exception of Chinese as a 2nd language).
